This may not make sense to most people, but to Bramah, it had potential as a new type of press. In 1795, his research paid off, and he patented the first hydraulic press. The Bramah press, as it’s known today, became widely successful.

Hydraulic hoses are exposed to two temperature concerns: internal liquid temperature and external working temperature. As a result, hoses are rated for performance in terms of both temperatures, with a maximum and minimum functioning temperature rating. Exceeding these ratings can result in severely reduced working life or even failure, so it is pertinent to use a hose that is properly rated to both the liquid temperature and the environment temperature.

In some cases, the hydraulic system may require different levels of pressure at various stages of the pumping process, meaning that horsepower can be calculated as the root mean square (rms) and a smaller motor may suffice for the project. However, the motor must still be able to meet the torque requirement for the highest pressure level in the cycle. Once the rms and the maximum torque (including initial and operational levels) have been calculated, they can be cross-referenced with a motor manufacturer’s performance charts to determine whether the motor is the necessary size.
